Minnesota has lots to offer—Arkansas is also a very folksy place to visit. North or South Dakota have a culture all their own and aren’t hardly “touristy”. Sounds like a great sort of vacation plan.

Theres Lancaster/York Pennsylvania with amish country. Lots of Amish people, and home to tons of factories. Hershey factory is nearby too, and some pretzel brands factories.

Something kinda close is the Anasazi ruins in the 4 Corners. I am kind of a history nut & really enjoyed these. Also the Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland is kinda cool too.
Hope you guys find something!

We found unique places like:
Sequoia Trees in California (to visit) unique place in the world
Sedona in Arizona (can stay there)
Monument Valley in (Arizona) to visit
Taos in New Mexico (romantic, small town, unique, is like another world, good for winter time too, they have ski resort, hard to book a place right now, but maybe there are still some with local people that are the best houses anyway).

Mackinaw Island, Michigan
closed for Winter for the most part, but still can go
island in lake Huron, have to take a ferry or a plane to get there
lots of BandB’s, shops and bars
no cars except emergency vehicles on the island,
just horse and buggy, and bicycles
lots of history and nature, architecture,
Northern Michigan in general is pretty great
try Marquette, Traverse City, Sioux St. Marie, Mackinaw City,
Jericho area in West Virginia, or Bramwell area is nice also.
there is a ski resort Mt. Snowshoe near Jericho, and some Civil War battle areas, and little cabins and rivers
Bramwell is an old Mining baron Mansion town – very unique
